Industry-Academia Collaboration in Innovation


In order to encourage students in related departments to study hard, YOKE continued with its scholarship program in 2017; it offers scholarships to four universities and their departments, namely the Department of Mechanical Engineering at National Cheng Kung University, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at National Chung Hsing University, the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Feng Chia University, and the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Tatung University. Statistics of scholarships offered to said universities since 2002 show that more than NTD 10 million has been issued over the past 17 years, benefiting a total of 234 students. The YOKE Scholarship for the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Feng Chia University, in particular, has been implemented for 15 years and has helped a total of 69 students; the accumulated value has reached NTD 1.33 million. The beneficiaries have also had very nice developments after they graduated. Students that received the very first scholarships are now assistant professors at universities of science and technology, devoting themselves to the semi-conductor materials field, with the opportunity to work with the industry.


For students that have received scholarships offered by YOKE, they are prioritized candidates for practical training opportunities at YOKE. Besides scholarships, between 2013 and 2016, a total of 25 students from 6 universities, including National Cheng Kung University and National Chung Hsing University have become interns at YOKE. They were assigned to respective departments reflective of their skills. The practical training lasted for 1 to 6 months. For the internship program of 2017, it was planned with an even more rigid attitude. Graduate students and undergraduates, 11 in total, from National Cheng Kung University, National Chung Hsing University, and the other two universities were recruited to receive practical training at departments such as product development, sales, production control, procurement, manufacturing, and quality assurance. Through practical training, they had counselors, who are supervisors or senior staff, to provide assistance. Besides routine tasks, 8 sessions, totaling 11 hours, of advanced courses were planned for interns at respective departments to help them understand how products are manufactured at YOKE. The lecturers are department heads. Students have to write a report and take quizzes. Before the internship program is completed, professors from said departments at universities are invited to take part together with medium-to-high-ranking supervisors in the release conference where the interns give a presentation and share what they have learned so that they have an overview of the accomplishments of practical training. In order to enforce the internship program, YOKE, starting in 2017, also subsidized overseas travel of counselors providing assistance to interns at respective departments to thank them for supporting the internship program and helping with training given their busy schedule at work.
