Adopt energy conservation and waste reduction

Energy management

In response to the international energy price and the rising importance of energy consumption to climate change, it is predictable that efficiency enhancement and effective management of energy will be the major issues for corporate sustainable development, and enhancing energy efficiency is the most economical and effective way.

We began implementing the ISO 50001:2018 EnMS in 2022 to enhance energy efficiency through systemic management. We reduced energy consumption by 1.18% in 2023 to accomplish the target of 1% less of the baseline for all plants. Additionally, we received a total of 39 energy-related suggestions through the internal improvement suggestion system.

By establishing and operating the carbon reduction team, we continuously enhanced interdepartmental communication in 2023. In 2024 we will build the energy monitoring system to achieve real-time monitoring and analysis of energy consumption to discover potential opportunities for energy conservation and accelerate product footprint calculation. Apart from replacing the water tank pump in Plant II with the inverter model, we will also increase renewable use by building renewable facilities of up to 300 kWh to be completed in Q4 2024.

Energy-Saving Accomplishment

The 2023 energy consumption converted into heat energy reduced by 5,026.68 GJ (109 joules) over 2022 to 41,480.63 GJ.

Through continuous inventory energy-consuming equipment and processes, drawing up improvement plans, installing inverters to existing equipment, and process improvement, we saved electricity by about 78.5 GWh in 2023, equivalent to 38.863 tCO2e (calculated based on the carbon emission factor of 0.495 tCO2e/GWh for public electricity sales in 2022 as published by the Energy Bureau of the Ministry of Economic Affairs in 2023). This also means that we successfully accomplished the target of saving 1% of electricity each year as spelled out by the Ministry of Economic Affairs consecutively for the past five years.

Energy efficiency enhancement of thermal treatment continuous furnace

Energy Conservation

When starting up and shutting down the continuous furnace, we activated the reducer and spoiler fan,  by stage based on the feeding condition of the conveyor belt. We also set the startup time and shutdown time of the electrostatic precipitator, installed the inverter on the spoiler fan to reduce electricity consumption for per kilogram of thermal treatment by 8%.

Gas Reduction

In continuous furnace startup, we verified and adjusted the gas input timing to prevent gas wastage. After optimization,  electricity consumption for per kilogram of thermal treatment was reduced by 18%.
